Original Soviet VDV PBF “Hamster” Gas Mask – USSR Airborne 1970s

USSR PBF Hamster Gas Mask – Vintage Soviet VDV Airborne Equipment

Authentic Soviet PBF (ПБФ) gas mask, widely recognized among collectors by its nickname “Hamster” (Хомяк). This unusual model is associated with Soviet VDV Airborne troops and represents one of the most recognizable compact gas mask designs produced in the USSR during the Cold War period.

Unlike conventional Soviet masks that use a large external filter canister, the PBF Hamster was designed around a pair of compact EO-19E filter elements housed inside the cheek sections of the mask. The enlarged sides created its distinctive appearance and eventually gave rise to the popular “Hamster” nickname.

The compact construction made the PBF particularly interesting as military equipment associated with VDV and Soviet airborne use, where reducing bulky external equipment was advantageous.

The mask has the characteristic light-colored rubber facepiece, circular eyepieces, side air-intake assemblies and prominent central valve housing. This example dates from the Soviet era and is accompanied by its military-style carrying bag.

Today, the PBF is an unusual piece of original USSR equipment for collectors interested in Soviet VDV gear, Cold War militaria, Soviet gas masks and airborne military history.
