What is telnyashka? Short history of the Russian striped shirt

A real Telnyashka isn't just a striped shirt. It's a garment with over a century of history behind it. Originally worn by sailors, it later became part of military uniforms and eventually found its way into everyday life. Today, people wear Telnyashkas for many different reasons - military tradition, outdoor use, work, collecting, or simply because they like the timeless striped look.

The good news is that choosing a quality Telnyashka is actually quite simple once you know what to look for.

A Short History of the Telnyashka

The striped sailor shirt first appeared in Europe during the 19th century. French sailors were among the first to wear striped shirts because they were practical at sea. The contrasting stripes made sailors easier to spot against sails and rigging, while also helping hide dirt during long voyages.

The design eventually spread to Russia, where the Telnyashka became one of the most recognizable parts of naval uniforms. Over time, different military branches adopted their own stripe colors, turning the shirt into a symbol of service and tradition.

Even today, the Telnyashka remains one of the most iconic military garments ever made.

What Do the Different Stripe Colors Mean?

Most people recognize the classic blue and white Navy Telnyashka, but several versions exist.

Dark blue and white stripes are traditionally associated with naval forces.

Black and white versions are commonly linked to marines and submariners.

Light blue and white stripes became famous through the airborne troops, known as VDV.

Green stripes are associated with border guards.

Maroon stripes are connected with certain Spetsnaz, while orange stripes are often linked to rescue and emergency services.

What Makes a Good Telnyashka?

A proper Telnyashka should be comfortable, durable, and practical. It should keep its shape after washing, allow free movement, and remain comfortable during everyday use.

At the same time, it's important to understand what a Telnyashka is not.

Traditional cotton and wool Telnyashkas were designed as military underwear and everyday clothing. They work great for daily wear, outdoor activities, and moderate physical work. However, they are not designed as modern sportswear. Cotton and wool cannot move moisture away from the body as efficiently as modern synthetic performance fabrics. For intense sports or high-output activities, thermal base layers are usually a better choice.

Understanding the GOST Standard

Traditional military Telnyashkas were produced according to GOST 25904-83, the Soviet standard for naval knitted shirts.

When a Telnyashka follows this standard, several things are usually true.

The fabric is made from cotton yarn or a cotton-wool blend.

The material must meet minimum density requirements to ensure durability.

The stripes are knitted directly into the fabric using different colored yarns rather than being printed onto finished cloth.

The stitching, finishing, and overall construction must meet strict quality requirements.

This is one reason why old military Telnyashkas earned a reputation for lasting many years.

Single Knit vs Triple Knit

One of the biggest differences between Telnyashkas is the knitting method.

Lightweight summer models are usually made from thinner jersey fabrics and are perfect for warm weather.

Triple knit Telnyashkas are a different story.

Triple knit Telnyashka fabric (left) is thicker, warmer and more durable, while summer knit fabric (right) is lighter, cooler and more breathable.

The fabric is thicker, denser, and much more durable. Because of the way it is knitted, more warm air is trapped inside the material, making the shirt noticeably warmer in cold weather.

Triple knit Telnyashkas also hold their shape much better than lighter versions. They stretch very little, but that's exactly why they stay looking the same year after year.

For many enthusiasts, double knit cotton Telnyashkas are the best balance between comfort and durability.

The warmest traditional version is the cotton and wool triple knit model, often made from a 50/50 blend of cotton and wool.

Details That Most People Never Notice

One interesting feature of traditional military Telnyashkas is the neckline.

On many classic models, the front and back neck openings are identical. You can literally put the shirt on either way without thinking about it. It sounds simple, but it was originally intended to make the garment more practical and durable.

Traditional GOST models may have no side seams at all, or one or two side seams depending on the production batch.

The stripes themselves are usually between 9 and 12 mm wide.

These small details may not seem important, but together they are part of what separates a real military-style Telnyashka from a fashion copy.

Choosing the Right Size

Traditional military sizing is based primarily on chest measurement.

The simplest method is to measure your chest circumference and divide the number by two. This gives you the traditional size used for many military garments.

That said, modern buyers often prefer a looser fit than soldiers did.

Many of our customers choose one size larger than their normal size, especially when buying wool-blend Telnyashkas. Natural fabrics can shrink slightly after washing, although they can usually be stretched back into shape if needed.

How to Care for Your Telnyashka

A quality Telnyashka is made from natural fibers, so proper care matters.

Wash it in cool water, ideally at 30°C (86°F) or lower.

For the first few washes, many experienced collectors prefer hand washing to preserve the sharp contrast between the stripes.

Use mild detergents whenever possible.

Dry the shirt flat rather than hanging it, which helps prevent unnecessary stretching.

If ironing is needed, steam works better than high heat.

With proper care, a good Telnyashka can easily last for many years.

Final Thoughts

The reason the Telnyashka has survived for generations is simple: it works.

A genuine GOST-style Telnyashka combines durable construction, natural materials, practical design, and timeless style. Whether you choose a lightweight summer model or a heavyweight double knit version, understanding the details behind the shirt helps you choose the right one for your needs.

In our store you'll find classic summer Telnyashkas, heavyweight triple knit cotton models, and traditional brushed lining versions made in the style of the original military shirts.
